INDIVIDUAL COUNSELLING

Anxiety Counselling

Anxiety can make everyday life feel smaller than it should. Whether it's constant worry, racing thoughts, panic, or feeling permanently on edge, counselling provides a calm, confidential space to understand what's driving those feelings and develop practical ways to feel more in control, at a pace that feels right for you.

Blossom Tree Counselling is based in our private practices in Bawtry and Retford, welcoming clients from across Nottinghamshire and Yorkshire.

UNDERSTANDING ANXIETY

What anxiety can feel like

Anxiety is one of the most common reasons people come to counselling. It can show up physically — a racing heart, a tight chest, restless sleep, a stomach that won't settle — as much as it shows up in your thinking. Racing thoughts, overthinking a conversation hours after it's finished, a constant, low-level sense that something's about to go wrong.

For some people, anxiety is tied to something specific: a change at work, a health worry, becoming a parent, or a big decision. For others, it's harder to pin down — it's just there, in the background, most days.

Often it's not the anxiety itself that brings someone to counselling, but what it starts to cost. Avoiding things you'd normally do without a second thought. Snapping at people you don't mean to. Feeling exhausted by effort that doesn't show on the outside. That's usually the point people decide to look at it properly, rather than manage around it indefinitely.

It's also common for anxiety to build gradually rather than arrive all at once, which can make it harder to notice until it's already affecting sleep, work, or relationships you value. There's no threshold you need to reach before it's worth talking to someone — if it's taking up more space in your life than you'd like, that's reason enough.

With the right support, most people find they understand their anxiety better and feel more able to cope with it — not because it disappears overnight, but because they've built ways of responding to it that actually work.

HOW COUNSELLING CAN HELP

Space to understand, tools to move forward

Understand what's driving it

Anxiety rarely comes from nowhere, even when it feels that way. Counselling gives you room to look at what's underneath it — patterns, pressures, or past experiences — without judgement or a rush to explain it away. Understanding what's actually going on, in plain terms, is usually the first real step towards it feeling more manageable.

Calm the physical side

Anxiety lives in the body as much as the mind — tension, a racing heart, disrupted sleep, restlessness that won't settle. We work on practical ways to recognise what's happening as it happens, and build responses that help you settle, rather than staying stuck in the same cycle of reacting to it.

Rebuild confidence

Anxiety often shrinks life gradually — a meeting avoided here, a call put off there, plans quietly declined. Counselling helps you look honestly at what's been affected and find realistic ways back in, at a pace that feels manageable rather than overwhelming or rushed.

Lasting change, not quick fixes

The aim isn't dependency on weekly sessions indefinitely. We work towards practical understanding and coping strategies you can keep using long after counselling ends, so the change you make continues in your own day-to-day life, not just in the room.

COMMON EXPERIENCES

Does any of this sound familiar?

You replay conversations for hours afterwards, picking apart what was said.

Your mind won't switch off at night, even when you're worn out.

You've turned down plans you'd normally enjoy because the thought of going feels like too much.

Small decisions — what to say in an email, what to order at a restaurant — leave you stuck.

Your heart starts racing or you feel tense out of nowhere, with no obvious trigger.

You're coping, but it's taking far more effort than anyone around you realises.

Getting Started

A gentle, unhurried start

A free first conversation

A short, no-pressure chat to talk through what's going on and how we might help. There's no obligation to book anything further afterwards.

Your first session

We'll talk about any previous counselling experience, explain how sessions work, and start to understand what's brought you here. We'll also agree the practical details together — confidentiality, fees, cancellations. It's as much about you deciding if we're the right fit as it is about us understanding your situation.

Finding your pace

Sessions are weekly, reviewed together as you go. There's no fixed number and no block bookings — just ongoing support for as long as it's useful to you.

FAQ

Questions people often ask

If your question isn't answered here, just get in touch - we're happy to help.

Anxiety can show up differently for everyone — as constant worry, physical tension, panic, or a general sense of unease that's hard to explain. You don't need a clear label before reaching out. If it's affecting your day-to-day life, that's reason enough to talk to someone.
No. You can contact us directly to book a free consultation or your first session — no referral needed.
There's no set number, anxiety affects everyone differently, so we review progress together regularly and make decisions about pacing and ending collaboratively — you're never locked into more sessions than you actually need.
Yes. What you share stays private between you and your counsellor. There are limits around serious risk or safeguarding — as with any registered practice — and we explain these clearly before we begin, so you always know exactly where you stand.
That's completely normal, and most of our clients haven't either. Your first session includes a straightforward explanation of how counselling works, with no assumption that you already know what to expect.
Sessions are primarily in-person at our Bawtry and Retford practices. Remote sessions are available in specific circumstances — for example, if anxiety makes leaving the house particularly difficult, or where a disability makes travel harder. We can talk this through at your free consultation.
