UNDERSTANDING SELF-ESTEEM & CONFIDENCE
What low self-esteem can feel like
Low self-esteem often has little to do with how things are actually going. People can be doing well at work, in relationships, or in daily life, and still feel like they're falling short, or waiting to be found out. It can show up as a relentless inner critic, difficulty accepting a compliment, or a habit of downplaying anything you've achieved.
It often affects decisions too — turning down an opportunity in case you're not good enough for it, over-apologising, or saying yes when you mean no just to avoid letting someone down. Comparing yourself to others is common as well, usually in a way that leaves you feeling like you're behind.
People often bring this to counselling once it starts limiting choices — a promotion not applied for, a relationship boundary never set, a decision made from self-doubt rather than what you actually want. Sometimes it's simply exhausting to carry a harsh inner voice day after day.
Low self-esteem doesn't mean something is fundamentally wrong with you. It's often rooted in long-standing patterns — early experiences, repeated comparisons, or old feedback that never got questioned.
With the right support, most people find they're able to notice the inner critic for what it is and build a steadier, more accurate sense of themselves — not by forcing confidence, but by testing it out gradually.
HOW COUNSELLING CAN HELP
Space to understand, tools to move forward
Understand where it comes from
Low self-esteem rarely appears out of nowhere — it's often built from early experiences, repeated comparisons, or old feedback that was never questioned. Counselling helps you explore where these patterns started, without judgement.
Quieten the inner critic
Many people with low self-esteem carry a harsh internal voice that goes unchallenged. We work on noticing this voice as it happens and responding to it more fairly, so it carries less weight over time.
Build confidence through action
Confidence tends to grow through doing, not just thinking. We work on practical, manageable steps — small at first — that let you test out new ways of showing up, rather than waiting to feel ready.
Make change that lasts
The aim isn't a quick boost that fades. We work towards a steadier sense of yourself and coping strategies you can keep using long after counselling ends, so the change holds in your daily life.
COMMON EXPERIENCES
Does any of this sound familiar?
You downplay achievements before anyone else gets the chance to.
You replay small mistakes long after everyone else has forgotten them.
You say yes when you mean no, just to avoid letting someone down.
You assume people are judging you, even when there's no real evidence they are.
Compliments feel awkward, so you deflect them almost automatically.
You hold back from opportunities you're capable of, just in case you're found out.
