UNDERSTANDING STRESS & BURNOUT
What stress and burnout can feel like
Some stress is a normal part of life — a deadline, a difficult conversation, a busy patch that passes. Burnout is different. It's what happens when stress doesn't get the chance to let up, often for months, until exhaustion becomes the baseline rather than the exception.
It often shows up as running on empty even after a weekend off, a growing sense of dread about work or responsibilities, and a shorter fuse with people you'd normally have patience for. Concentration can slip, things that used to feel manageable start to feel like too much, and the usual ways of coping stop working.
Burnout doesn't only come from paid work. Caring for a family member, managing a demanding home life, or simply carrying too much for too long can all lead to the same place — a kind of depletion that rest alone doesn't fix.
People often reach out once they notice it's affecting more than just their working hours — sleep, relationships, or their sense of who they are outside of what they do. That's usually the point it's worth talking to someone, rather than waiting to hit a wall.
With the right support, most people find they're able to identify what's driving the pressure and build a more sustainable way of managing it — not by doing less that matters to them, but by changing how they carry it.
HOW COUNSELLING CAN HELP
Space to understand, tools to move forward
Understand what's driving the pressure
Stress often has more than one source — workload, expectations, caring responsibilities, or patterns of taking on too much. Counselling gives you room to look at what's actually contributing to it, without judgement, so you can respond to the real cause rather than just the symptoms.
Recognise the signs before burnout takes hold
Burnout tends to build gradually, which makes it easy to override the early warning signs. We work on noticing what's happening in your body and mind as it happens, so you can act sooner rather than reaching a breaking point.
Rebuild boundaries that hold
Many people heading towards burnout struggle to say no or switch off. Counselling supports you in setting boundaries that are realistic for your life and your role, and in holding them without guilt.
Find a sustainable way forward
The aim isn't a quick recovery followed by the same pattern repeating. We work towards practical changes and coping strategies that hold up under pressure, so the change lasts once counselling ends.
