UNDERSTANDING DEPRESSION
What depression can feel like
Depression is one of the most common reasons people come to counselling, and it doesn't always look the way people expect. It's not always sadness — often it's flatness, a loss of interest in things you used to enjoy, or a tiredness that sleep doesn't fix. Concentration can slip, basic tasks — replying to a text, making dinner, leaving the house — can start to feel like far more effort than they should.
For some people, depression is connected to something identifiable: a loss, a change, a period of prolonged stress. For others, it builds slowly and quietly, without an obvious cause, until one day the low mood has just become the default.
Often what brings someone to counselling isn't a single bad day, but the accumulation — weeks of feeling flat, withdrawing from people, or a growing sense that things won't change. That's usually the point people decide to talk to someone, rather than wait for it to lift on its own.
It's also common to feel embarrassed or unsure whether things are "bad enough" to seek support. There's no threshold you need to reach. If low mood has been affecting your life for a while, that's reason enough to talk to someone.
With the right support, most people find they understand what's underneath their depression and feel more able to move through it — not through a quick fix, but through small, practical steps that build over time.
HOW COUNSELLING CAN HELP
Space to understand, tools to move forward
Understand what's underneath it
Depression often has layers — some obvious, some harder to see. Counselling gives you room to explore what's contributing to it, without judgement or pressure to have it all figured out. Understanding what's actually going on is usually the first real step towards feeling less stuck.
Rebuild motivation and structure
Depression can make even small tasks feel impossible, which often leads to a cycle of withdrawing further. We work on practical, manageable steps to rebuild routine and motivation gradually — not by pushing you, but by finding what's realistic for where you are right now.
Notice unhelpful thinking patterns
Depression often comes with a harsh inner voice — self-criticism, hopelessness, all-or-nothing thinking. Counselling helps you notice these patterns as they happen and start to respond to them differently, so they carry less weight over time.
Reconnect with what matters
Depression tends to isolate — from people, activities, and things that once felt meaningful. Counselling supports you in reconnecting with these gradually, at a pace that feels manageable, so change extends into your daily life, not just the session.
COMMON EXPERIENCES
Does any of this sound familiar?
You can't remember the last time you actually looked forward to something.
Getting through basic tasks — replying to messages, washing up — feels like climbing a hill.
You're sleeping more than usual, but somehow still exhausted.
You've stopped replying to friends, not because you don't care, but because it feels like too much.
Small mistakes feel like proof that you're failing at everything.
You look "fine" from the outside, but most days feel like you're pushing through fog.

Your first session
We'll talk about any previous counselling experience, explain how sessions work, and start to understand what's brought you here. We'll also agree the practical details together — confidentiality, fees, cancellations. It's as much about you deciding if we're the right fit as it is about us understanding your situation.
Finding your pace
Sessions are weekly, reviewed together as you go. There's no fixed number and no block bookings — just ongoing support for as long as it's useful to you.
